The Door

Given our recent, steady stream of bad news, I was going to write something that fit my mood, something dark But then I thought, why add another layer of gray to a world already gone mad. Sooo, how about something light instead? Ok! Are we doing the picture of the door? Yes, the door. Ok, a short script then!

Location: A mission along the California coast.

Time of day: Noon-ish

Characters: V (visitor), C (curiosity, an internal voice), P (priest/monk)

V is walking along and all of a sudden he sees the door and thus begins an internal dialog with C. We hear from P at the end of the scene.

C

Wait! Stop. What an interesting door. Let’s go take a closer look.

V

Hmmm. Doesn't look very inviting. I don't see a "Welcome" sign anywhere...

C

No... but there's a cross above the door, it can't be all bad.

V

I think they're trying to keep things in, not let things out.

C

Go on! Go on! There's a clapper on the door, announce yourself.

V

OKOK! Three knocks and we're off if there’s no answer.

V approaches the door, grasps the clapper, and knocks 3 times, each knock echoing down a long hallway.

C

Press your ear to the door, hear anything?

From inside we hear the approaching clap of sandaled footsteps.

C

Wait, listen!

P

"Comiiiiing!".

V

Maybe we should leave. They may be sacrificing something.

From inside an irritated mumble fussing with a series of deadbolts. The door wheezes open slightly casting a shaft of light on a weathered face and a glaring bloodshot, uninviting eye.

P – irritated

YES?

V

Hello … Ummm... I was...

P

Dominoes?

V

Umm... Nooo but--

The door slams shut with a loud thud. We hear mumbling as M snaps the locks into place followed by more mumbling and the sound of receding footsteps.

C

Welll... let's try back another time... maybe after lunch.

V

Lunch, yes I’m famished!

C

Pizza?
